Academic Editors needed (work at home)
Posted on 9:08 AM by Nathalie
Academic English Editing is looking for Editors to edit papers for students, graduate students, and professors.
That's what our growing business specializes in. (We also get a fair number of application essays). Many of our clients speak English as a second language, and there is a wide range of writing abilities from the elementary to very accomplished. The work typically involves involves heavy editing and some rewriting. (We hold ourselves to an ethical standard; rewriting for style is legitimate as long as we don't change the content). Our clients are mostly students and graduate students at top universities. The pay is $20-30/hour, depending on the job, usually $20. The amount of work will vary seasonally, and may also depend on how good you are, as well as on how much work we have. We are working on expanding the business. Right now it's slow during the early part of the semester/quarter (and in the summer) and very busy at the end. It is very busy right now and while I am always hiring, I expect to take on at least one or two new people immediately, so if you want to apply, please don't wait. I'll still need people a month from now, but I have work right now. I cannot guarantee you how much work I will have for you, but if you're good, there will be some, maybe a lot.
We are looking for people with specialties in different academic fields, although a good general background, especially in the humanities and/or social sciences, is always useful. We have a shortage in certain of the natural sciences, but most of our papers are in the humanities and social sciences. This is a very good job for a graduate student with teaching experience.
If you are interested, send me an email. It would be helpful if you very briefly describe your academic background (e.g;, schools and GPA) and any relevant experience, but I will be sending application forms at least to those applicants who look promising, and the application will request all of the information I need, so you may not want to go into too much detail in your email to spare yourself extra effort, as it is mainly the application I will look at. The next stage in hiring is an editing test.
It is hard to find people who do this well, but if you are a good writer and were good at writing papers in college or graduate school, this may be a good job for you. Some of the papers we get are genuinely interesting; the rest are interesting to work on if you like working with language and puzzling over how something can be better worded. Some of the heavy editing is almost like translating in that respect. You can work at home (we edit on the computer - you need Microsoft Word - and communicate with the clients by email) and you can set your own hours. If I need something done on short notice I will often be able to pay the higher rate. I employ people on a contract basis and your only obligations will be to do the assignments you have agreed to accept by the deadline agreed upon. If you are interested, I look forward to hearing from you.
Visit us at www.academicenglishediting.com. No phone calls please; it's just a lot easier to deal with applications by email.
