There are some good sites out there that offer you the chance to bid on a specific project that needs doing and if chosen to complete it, paid for your work.  The most popular site is undoubtedly www.odesk.com.
You will find all kinds of projects ranging from data entry, to complex web design and development. For starters, you might find the interface to be a bit overwhelming, but do not be discouraged, look around, check what type of projects are offered, what other people are bidding for etc.  I suggest you first start with creating an account. When creating your account consider putting in your real information if you think that you will be making use and earning from this site.

They have a readiness test which you should take in order to bid on projects which you feel you can work on. There are also other specified skill tests which once passed will be displayed on your profile qualifications - showing your proficiency. It's a good idea to at least insert some basic information in your profile, giving an overall idea of what you are good at, what you have achieved and what makes you an exceptional worker.

Bidding is placing how much are you willing to work on the project for. The goal is not to bid the lowest (although that might help) but to place the best amount you think you will work on the project for. You also have what you call 'job quota', this is the number of applications you can make each week. This job quota is dependent on the number of skills test you have taken and eventually the feedback you have earned from your odesk jobs.

Remember to treat odesk like a real job. A bad feedback might give you a hard time trying to find new projects and a good feedback ratings mean better chances of getting higher paying jobs. Also you have to have perseverance - the probability is that you will not land with your first job very quickly but by bidding often on projects of your choice, will one day start you off!
